Welcome to the COPD Study Web Site.  Our goal is to inform you about two ongoing clinical studies for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also known as COPD and to help you learn whether you might be eligible to participate in one of the two studies.

We are currently seeking people to participate in a clinical trial(s) testing the safety and efectiveness of an investigational product. We recommend that you consult your doctor before participating in a clinical trial.

Please review the details of the clinical trial(s) listed on this website if you meet the initial online pre-screening criteria you will be referred to a qualified physician that is within reasonable proximity to your residential zip.

WHAT IS A CLINICAL STUDY?

A clinical research study, also known as a clinical trial is designed to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug or investigational treatment in a group of volunteers. It evaluates a study drug's ability to treat a condition, its safety, and its possible side effects. Investigational means that the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved the drug for the intended use in the population.

ABOUT CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE

COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. COPD causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightness, and fatigue when exercising or moving around.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD in the United States. Most people who have COPD have smoked or used to smoke. Long-term exposure to other lung irritants, such as air pollutants, chemical fumes, or dust, also may contribute to COPD. Over time, the lung airway may become progressively damaged. Most people who have COPD may have both emphysema and chronic (gets worse) bronchitis. Thus the general term "COPD" is more accurate. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation or swelling of the airways, which restricts airflow and causes coughing and excess mucus production. Emphysema is characterized by damage to the support structures of the airways of the lungs, making them prone to collapse, causing shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
